Diego E. Gómez

Colombia / Biologist / Ornithologist / ProAves

Biologist and ornithologist with experience in the management and implementation of conservation strategies in natural areas for the preservation of biodiversity. He currently serves as Director of Protected Areas for the ProAves Foundation of Colombia, leading effective conservation processes for different taxonomic groups present in the country (with emphasis on birds). In addition, in conjunction with local communities, he is currently developing educational and research activities to promote environmental awareness and the proper use of natural resources in the territories.

Since 1998, ProAves has championed one of the most important bird conservation milestones in Latin America and the world: saving the Yellow-eared Parrot (Ognorhynchus icterotis) from extinction.

This example of species recovery was the beginning of the consolidation of a network of 27 nature reserves that safeguard the most endangered species: endemic, resident and migratory birds, as well as mammals, amphibians, reptiles and a wealth of flora and fauna in our country.

This great conservation impact has been possible thanks to the enormous effort of our collaborators, communities in rural areas, private and governmental organizations and institutions, in order to promote the care of birds and biodiversity. There are 25 years of experience executing and implementing conservation, research and environmental education work, which expand scientific knowledge and empower communities in the protection of birds and prevent the extinction of our species in the country of birds.
